For the first five minutes I thought this would be a really good album... Then the singer came in ruining the whole mood I was getting in. Sweden's Cult of Luna has a quite unique style, though. They're a blend of Porcupine Tree and Neurosis (among others). The songs are emotive, slow, downbeat and atmospheric. I quite like them, if I don't pay attention to the vocals. With a different singer this album would have been great (someone with a similar voice to Devon Graves' would have been the perfect choice for this album). I just don't like Klas Rydberg's voice (fortunately there were some long instrumental passages, which made this album quite listenable). I must tell you that I have a promotional copy of the album, which isn't mastered yet (pre-mastered version). Some parts are even unmixed, so my forthcoming comment about production concern only the promo version. The sounds are quite good (they strengthen the mood, which the songs create). Although the sounds could have been a lot better, they suited this album well. Mixing-wise the sounds were a bit dull. However, it isn't a big flaw compared to the incompetent singer. All in all, Salvation ain't a bad album (it ain't great either). With a different singer, I would have enjoyed this album a lot more. You may like it, though. Imagine listening Porcupine Tree with a singer who screams to the point where his voice breaks (all the time). Visit Artist's Website - MAGE (13.10.2004) « back
