First of all, I must admit I haven't heard of Deinonychus before. Nevertheless, they've been in the music scene for quite a long time... Deinonychus was already formed in 1992, and this is their 6th album. Deinonychus is quite an unique band (they have a style of their own). Their music is quite obscure and maybe hard-to-approach for some. Insomnia is a concept album, and its concept was completely inspired by September the 11th, 2001.
According to the promo sheet, their music is Apocalyptic Suicidal Music... Well, that definition might scare some (although I was intrigued to hear what the genre would sound like). Actually I was favourably surprised to hear the music that was quite emotional, atmospheric death metal. There are few death metal bands that impress me, and Deinonychus is one of them (the one on the top is Disillusion). Deinonychus may not be the one of the most innovative death metal bands, but they do have their own style. Their compositions are quite slow, which might be the reason why the song lengths are over 10 minutes (only 2 songs were under 10 minutes). Every now and then there are orchestral (probably synth made) still water sections, which diversify the overall feel of the record.
This album has been recorded, mixed and mastered at the Outer Sound Studios (Novembre, Stormlord, Necrodeath) in Rome with Giuseppe Orlando (Novembre) as producer. The sounds are good for the most part... However, they could be improved in some ways.
If you listen to death and/or doom metal (at all), I advise you to give a listen to Deinonychus. This album isn't a bad choice for fans of the genre...
