It's about time to get Steve Stevens on Derek Sherinian's solo project. I've expected this to happen for quite a while (as I consider Steve Stevens to be one of the best guitarists among Andy Timmons and few others...) The way how Sherinian's albums turn out depends a lot on the guest musicians (mostly guitarists). Mythology is Sherinian's fourth album, and actually the best album he has released so far. Those who haven't listened to Derek Sherinian's solo work may have heard his playing on albums of the following bands/artists: Planet X, Dream Theater, Alice Cooper, Billy Idol and Kiss.
Songs on Mythology are mostly metal, but also other genres are at hand. Even Steve Stevens' passion for flamenco is present on "Goin' to Church". Although the line-up changes on every Derek Sherinian release, its core remains intact (Zakk Wylde, Steve Lukather and Simon Phillips, for example, are all featured on this album). Unfortunately, the song material isn't perfect... There are some songs that could have been left out. However, this would shorten the album, which isn't desirable either (Mythology is little over 45 minutes long).
Production on this album could have been better... Although I don't have complaints regarding the mastering, mixing seemed to lack something. Nevertheless, the production is quite good.
All in all, this is a good album... It could be better if some songs would be replaced with better ones, but for the most part the album is very good... Especially songs where Steve Stevens is featured seem to be the highlights of this album (for example, "Goin' to Church" and "A View from the Sky" both are great compositions with great playing as well). I hope Derek Sherinian's upcoming albums will contain more of Steve Stevens' playing.
