Nihilistic Contentment

Year: 2005
Format: CD
Label: Earache
Genre: [Death Metal]
Overall Rating: 6.5
Music: 6.0
Production: 7.5

On 'Nihilistic Contentment' Exmortem has re-united with ex-Dimmu Borgir drummer Reno. According to Earache, they display a "relentless faith in their firestorm brand of Death Metal". Nevertheless, to me their music doesn't sound unique or especial, but instead it gives me an impression of average death metal (nothing groundbreaking). I wish their music would be more innovative (for example, in the vein of Lost Soul).

Production on this album is quite good. The sounds are quite felicitous, if one ignores the background noise (distortion) that occurs occasionally on guitar parts. Unfortunately, the music isn't of the same quality. Overall this album doesn't offer sensually nor intellectually stimulating experience, instead it offers somewhat bothersomely unimaginative compositions. Fortunately, it contained few good parts (which aren't enough to save the whole record though) during its shortish length (32 minutes 56 seconds).
