After winning the "Best Guitarplayer of Holland `96-97" award, Anand Mahangoe decided to record his debut album titled as 'A Man's Mind'. This debut album was convincing enough to earn him the place of support act for Tony MacAlpine few times. Since then Anand has already released his second album "Joy 4 Ever" through Lion Music. To ease the wait of Anand's third album, Lion Music re-releases his debut album with an updated sound and two additional bonus tracks.
Anand's music is very similar to early Joe Satriani (Surfing with the Alien, Flying in a Blue Dream, Time Machine etc.) In addition, Anand has definitely listened to Steve Vai as well. Although Anand manages to compose good guitar instrumentals, his songs lack originality. Many of his ideas seem to have been taken straight from Joe Satriani. Therefore one can't venerate Anand's art as much as the art of his idols. Nevertheless, the music is really good (as one may expect from a guitarist who bears similarity to Joe Satriani).
Production-wise this album could be better... The sounds itself are quite fitting, but few errors are a bit disturbing. Also cymbals could have been mixed better.
Anand's debut album is rather good guitar-oriented instrumental rock album. Since Joe Satriani and Steve Vai are quite highly regarded among the fans of instrumental guitar music, Anand seems to have taken the "safe way" to enter the field of guitar instrumentals. A Man's Mind will most likely appeal to the fans of Joe Satriani and Steve Vai.
