Dreamtale's journey of seeking the sound of their own seems everlasting. On this new album Jarkko Ahola takes care of vocals. Although he's better than the previous singers of this band, he has difficulties in reaching the high notes. In addition he sounds quite funny when he tries to be pretentious (just like Tony Kakko). Occasionally his prononciation is straight from the German Handbook of Power Metal Singing (I wonder if it's intentional ;)
The album title 'Difference' must originate from the building blocks of this album, since the material pays homage to many well-known hard rock/metal acts. Therefore, one could criticize Dreamtale for lacking their own creativity. For example, "New Life" blends Bon Jovi, Lordi and Gary Moore among others (it's like a quiz to recognise all the featured rip-offs). On the other hand, I bet there are lots of people who enjoy their music despite the lack of originality.
The production was handled at the Finnvox studios, Finland. In consequence, there's not much to complain about the sounds. In summary, this is a typical power metal album in the vein of Sonata Arctica, Freedom Call, Stratovarius, Gamma Ray, Helloween and Edguy to name a few. Unfortunately, it doesn't have anything new to offer to the genre.
Release dates: March 21st, 2005 (International) and March 2nd, 2005 (Finland)
