Utuk Xul has been among us already for 10 years (which is quite hard to believe, since 'The Goat of the Black Possession' is their debut album). In the beginning (1994) their name was Dies Irae and they released one demo tape titled as 'The Law Is for All'. In 1997 the band decided to change its name to Utuk Xul. Not until 2003 did they record their debut album, which got locally released in 2004. Needless to say, it was internationally released in 2005. Musically 'The Goat of the Black Possession' is rather monotonous. The songs aren't diverse enough to keep listener intrigued for several listens. Overall I'd say their music is quite average black metal. Production on this album is quite weak... Although the recordings are somewhat clean, the sounds could be a lot better (almost in every aspect). The guitars could be thicker and more powerful, same with drums, and cymbals could have more clarity. On top of all, the sounds got distorted every now and then. Overall, I'm rather disappointed with Utuk Xul's debut. - MAGE (March 17th, 2005) « back
