The third album of hard rockers Biss, titled as Face-off, features yet another line-up change in Biss' short existence. This time the microphone is taken by Marc Storace (Krokus), who's already the third vocalist of Biss. One could say constant line-up changes aren't good for a band, since fans aren't usually understanding about these things... especially with singers, the case is very delicate. However, the main man Ralph “Doc” Heyne isn't put off by this but continues building his career with Biss. The music on Face-off is smooth hard rock in the vein of the countless artists of the eighties. I reckon Def Leppard isn't one of their main influences, although their second song is titled as Pyromania. Actually there's not much point in naming similar artists, since bands falling under the hard rock genre aren't usually too innovative. During "Face-off" Biss seems to indiscernibly pay homage to some of their influences every now and then... the fifth song is actually a cover of Icon's "Raise the Hammer". At times the material is slightly undistinguished and colourless... on the other hand, there are times when the music is very successful. Some of the highlights on this album are "Pyromania", Dark Sign of Day ("D.S.O.D.") and "Lady of the Night". Production-wise Biss' Face-off is quite good. Mr. Bar and Mr. Fly handled the production job well, and the mixing of this album took place at Barfly Studios, Germany by Michael Voss (Casanova, Silver). The sounds are rather fitting and the mastering has been done proficiently. Overall, Biss' Face-off is definitely not an original album but quite a mediocre one... however, some hard rock fans may find it worthy of a purchase.
