The Crest is back with a second album and Nell still remains as their singer. As some of you may know, Nell is nowadays also the singer of Theatre of Tragedy since Liv Kristine Espenæs left the band in late 2003... not to get sidetracked, The Crest's second album is titled as "Vain City Chronicles" and it's more guitar-driven and heavier than their debut album. Vain City Chronicles consists of eleven melancholic tracks bordering on metal and alternative rock. The mix is balanced by Theatre of Tragedy vocalist Nell with her soft voice. Although the material on this album is mostly guitar-driven, at times there are also string sections in the vein of Apocalyptica. As a whole, Vain City Chronicles is a moderate album, which sails on quite safe waters (e.g. the music isn't innovative nor experimental). The sonic side on this album is rather good. The sounds are fitting and complement the melancholic melodies well. Regardless, there's still some room for improvement. The Crest's Vain City Chronicles is without a doubt an album that might appeal to a large majority of listeners with its highly accessible melodies and vocals. However, listening before buying is still recommended... Visit Artist's Website - MAGE (May 25th, 2005) « back
