Not many bands have the guts to sound original... those that have, usually gain a cult status but never make it "big". Sadly, this was the case with Watchtower and Psychotic Waltz, groups that Confessor shares some similarity to musically. All of these groups play(ed) technical metal, which isn't too popular a genre. Fortunately, there are still people who appreciate innovativeness and overlook intricacy in music, since nowadays simplicity is a bit too much in favour. Carrying the title of "Unraveled", this comeback album of the late eighties' underground metal group Confessor (formed back in 1986) is definitely a pleasant surprise for the fans of the band. Although this group plays music that is far from memorable, listening to this record isn't tiring at all. As with Watchtower and Psychotic Waltz, the vocalist of Confessor sings the way he wants to (making the music even more freaky). However, having heard Psychotic Waltz, I must admit I prefer their more melodic approach to songwriting (the occasional guitar solos that are scattered on Confessor's songs just don't impress me enough). The production, though, is reasonably good. In case you're open-minded and into unique sounding music with dozens of time signature changes, you should give Confessor a listen. With a bit more effort, it could have ended up being one of my favourites of 2005. Visit Artist's Website - MAGE (October 16th, 2005) « back
