Deviation from the Flow is the second album from Finnish prog metal newcomers, Malpractice. Well, the term 'newcomer' isn't quite accurate as the band was already founded in 1994. Initially the group started out as a thrash metal band, but soon after releasing their first CD-EP "Memorial", the band oriented towards more melodic and progressive brand of metal.

The sad fact about Malpractice is that as technically skilled the players are the music just doesn't succeed in taking hold of its listeners. Nonetheless, there are few good melodic runs every now and then. Unfortunately the memorability of the songs however remains fairly weak... though, there are few exceptions. For example, the album opener "Assembly Line" is one of the strongest tracks on this album.

The recording of this album took place at Astia-Studio A, Finland under producer Anssi Kippo's supervision. The sounds are rather apt and there aren't any bothersome blunders in the mix. Overall, Malpractice's debut offering ain't too bad, but their music needs a bit more edge and hookiness to attain recognition.
