Lately Frontiers Records has started to invest in the famous bands of the eighties, at least it seems as if that's the case. Last year's Journey album was rather good, and now with Toto's latest offering Frontiers once again delivers us the goods. As you may recall, Toto reunited roughly six years ago and they threw in some great tours. If melodic rock of the 80's still appeals to you, then you should keep on reading as we're getting to the new album now.

With "Falling in Between" Toto introduces a fresh, heavier and at times more progressive sound, Steve Lukather claims. However, I'd say their music hasn't changed that much from the early days. It's still melodic rock, but with a slightly more diverse approach (along with symphonic elements added here and there). Quality-wise this album is rather divaricate... all the songs don't appeal to me that much, while others are really good. For example "Falling in Between", "Dying on My Feet", "Bottom of Your Soul", "Simple Life" and "No End in Sight" made the strongest impression to me. If you dig 80's a lot, then "King of the World" is for you, so be sure to give it a listen.

Falling in Between was recorded in nine months at Phantom Studios, LA... the long time definitely states about this album being a labour of love. In addition to the efforts of the band's members, quite a few renowned musicians share their talents on this record - namely Ian Andersson (Jethro Tull), L. Shankar (Peter Gabriel), Lenny Castro and many others.

Basically this is a must-have album for the fans of Toto. I guess the band has intended to make music for everyone, hence the band's moniker Toto (Latin, and means "everyone"). However, this is actually a drawback as well, since all the material may not be your cup of tea.
