Who could have guessed that Sweden's melodic metal pride Evergrey would someday take a surprising movement of making their music more accessible to the masses. Well, I for one didn't see it coming... but it did happen, and one can evidence it by listening to the new Evergrey album "Monday Morning Apocalypse". At first, I was shocked because of this new trend theirs, and considered this sixth album as fairly monotonous and dull. Fortunately enough I took a day off and gave it few listens the next day. Discordantly it seems that not much has changed musically, but some changes are still very prominent on this new material.

The music has taken a route towards brevity, and thus the band has gained more tightness to their performance. Actually, only one song crosses the five-minute mark, so conciseness is definitely the keyword here. In addition, the group has introduced more popular subtlety to their music. At first, this may come as a really big surprise, but in the end the new ideas fit quite well to the music. However, there is one exception here - Lost is way too repetitious to my liking.

Duly to the new popular trend Evergrey has taken, the production task has been given over to professional production team of Sanken Sandquist and Stefan Glaumann (Bon Jovi, Def Leppard, Rammstein). In fact, the sounds are both assertive and atmospheric, so no hard feelings here. In the end, the latest offering from Evergrey turns out to be quite a winner. Perhaps the band still could further revolutionize their music - after all, they haven't renewed their art that much. Nonetheless, they have to be delicate in this, since too strict changes may transform the band we all love so much to something way different. Regardless, I'd like to believe Monday Morning Apocalypse is just the first step towards the "new" Evergrey - a group striving for innovation.
