Zen Rock And Roll's debut release End of the Age is somewhere in between progressive rock and art rock... It brings to mind 70's rock, which is really rare nowadays. Actually their album is quite refreshing to listen. Their music is little bit reminiscent of Yes and Genesis, but they still have their own unique style...

As you see from the tracklist, Zen Rock And Roll's songs are gigantic compositions which consist of many smaller pieces. There's only three songs on this album, but the album itself is over 45 minutes long. Despite the long length of the songs, they don't start to stultify but they sustain your interest throughout. Songs have some recurrent themes, but they won't bore you... actually they bind the separate parts to whole. Jonathan Saunders' songcrafting style is quite interesting as well as viable. He uses a lot of keyboards, and some parts are quite electronic (so also fans of electronic music might like this album).

Production on this album has been done well... Production suits the style well, there's not much to complain (except for some of the retro sounds). On the other hand, songs could have been better. Although the songs were interesting and quite eclectical, I wish they would have included some "easier to approach" material also. This album is art, so you have to concentrate on music. This album isn't instant entertainment, but if you give this album time, it will reward its listener (I listened to it 5 times and still I'm not bored of it). Listen to the samples at ProgRock Records' website to see if Zen Rock And Roll is for you.
