The new Godsmack album is plainly titled IV, since it's their fourth studio album. Already from the beginning these Boston-based rockers have had a sound of their own... on IV they continue their natural progress, though they don't offer much new to fans. Nonetheless, what has become their signature style, is now distinctively audible on this new record of theirs. IV actually features all the different sides of Godsmack.

As with the previous Godsmack records there are some cool, innovative ideas scattered here and there on this album. One of the definitive highlights on this album is the ethereal "Hollow" with its beautiful harmonies and soothing melodies. In addition to calm songs, Godsmack also handles rocking tunes well. For example, a fairly cool track is "Voodoo Too", which features those well-known trademark-characteristics of Godsmack - tribal rhythms and of course Sully Erna's distinctive vocals. The other songs are rather good as well, and they certainly don't lack the drive (for example, Temptation is a really groovy track).

To hone the sounds close to perfection, Godsmack has recruited legendary producer Andy Johns (Led Zeppelin, Van Halen, Rolling Stones) behind the mixing console. Though the sounds are really apt, slight distortion occurs on the sixth track. IV was recorded at Spiral Recording Studio in Los Angeles, where - for the first time ever - Godsmack had the luxury of writing and recording without any rush. They actually composed 35 songs for this album, and recorded 17 of them. Perhaps this is the very reason for the high overall quality of material on IV.

All in all, Godsmack's IV is a good metal album that should find its way to every fan's record collection. I actually regard this album as their strongest work thus far.
