The texan trio King's X has come up with a great album... Ogre Tones appealed to me already on my first listen, though all the songs didn't directly make a hit with me. Regardless, the more spins one gives to this record, the more one finds oneself grown to the material. The songs are both groovy and catchy rock/AOR tunes that should appeal to majority of the listeners of these genres. King's X has always been famous for their apposite mixture of rock and blues with psychedelic overtones, and on Ogre Tones the case hasn't changed. In case you're wondering about the album title, it's just a play on words - Ogre Tones sounds like a sinister version of overtones according to the band. Ogre Tones was produced and mixed by the famed Michael Wagener, who's best known for his work with Queen, Alice Cooper, Dokken, and Extreme among others. Though the sounds on this record are really good for the most part, the cymbals are a bit too sizzly for my taste. Otherwise, there's not much to point one's finger at. All in all, King's X's Ogre Tones is a good rock album that's both different and familiar - most hooks have been borrowed from some other artists, but they're blended so well and effortlessly that it doesn't matter at all.
