White Willow's fifth album provides quite a surprise in my book... the group's vocalist Sylvia Erichsen has been replaced by Trude Eidtang, and at the same time the music has taken a more modern route whilst still retaining the familiar characteristics of White Willow's folk-tinted melancholic art rock. This atmospheric album by the Norwegian rockers is titled as Signal to Noise, and it should please both fans of the band as well as attract some new listeners.

The material on this record is fairly steady in terms of quality. There aren't weak songs, and the lyrical offering on this album is just breath-taking. Whenever the album ends, one feels an overarching desire to press the play button again. However, more remarkable is the fact that one doesn't grow tired of the music, and thus Signal to Noise should become a long-lived record.

The noted Tommy Hansen (TNT, Helloween, Circus Maximus) handled the production and mixing on this album, and accordingly the result is really good, though I think the lead synth could have been lower in the mix by half decibels. Overall, White Willow's Signal to Noise is a great addition to any prog & art rock enthusiast's record collection, and therefore I wholeheartedly recommend it.
