Ever since releasing Theli in 1997, Therion has combined their metal roots with symphonic music. With their previous double album Lemuria/Sirius B, they stirred up the metal scene so that many started anticipating their forthcoming releases. Now, almost three years later, they've finally come up with a follow-up album titled as Gothic Kabbalah.

Already from the beginning it's obvious how Therion is still drifting further away from its roots, and someone acquainted with Blitzkrieg and Megatherion would probably not recognize them as the same group. There are almost no more traces of darker music, instead it'd be more appropriate now to describe Therion's songs as a fusion of power metal and symphonic music with a progressive twist.

The material on this album is quite divaricate in the sense that occasionally there are really good sections, but at times there are also less fortuitous parts. For example, some higher-pitched male vocals sound pretentious and slightly annoying. Regardless, Gothic Kabbalah is an enjoyable symphonic metal record. This group seems to get closer and closer to Arjen Lucassen's Ayreon, but instead of their current progression they should take few steps back and continue with the darker brand of symphonic metal that they used to do. Currently it just seems that there's something missing as the songs fail to be memorable.
