There's no denying what an influential band Paradise Lost has been in the gothic metal scene. In Requiem is their eleventh studio album, and could be described as the record finding balance between Paradise Lost's previous efforts... the material is getting heavier again, and the production is rawer than on their previous self-titled record. Nich Holmes sings both with Hetfield-esque rasp resembling the Icon-era of Paradise Lost and clean vocals exploring the lower register at times.

Musically this album is melodic and dark in atmosphere - gothic metal at its best, one could say, but something feels missing... while this is what one can expect from Paradise Lost, it still could be better in some ways. The material is a bit monotonous and would have benefitted from more diversity. Regardless, this album seems to get better with more listening, so with time it may grow on me even more.
