Since the early eighties, Asia has released some quality melodic rock albums. After a short hiatus Asia released a new studio album, Silent Nation, which is one of the best melodic rock albums I've heard this year. The quality of songs keeps me pushing the play button whenever the album ends (at 58-minute intervals). Despite the ordinary composititions (which don't offer anything new to the genre), this album is very good. The songs have been crafted delicately.
The strengths of Asia are the melodical vocals (choruses and verses) and the laid-back, melodic guitar solos. Compositions are good, but they aren't very diverse. I was favourably surprised with the guitar solo on the third track 'Midnight', which is in the tradition of Steve Vai. Guthrie Govan is an exceptional guitarist, who isn't a show-off but a skilful player who first and foremost thinks about the song.
Production on this album is first-class. Sounds suit the style well (they're clear as crystal). Therefore, listening this album is very enjoyable.
Overall this album is commendable, it seems like the guys of Asia are still going strong. I recommend this album to the fans of melodic rock (especially the old Asia fans will like it). If you haven't heard of Asia (or listened to any of their albums) before, be sure to check them out. You won't regret it.
