Joe Satriani is one of the most known guitar virtuosos alive, and his 13th album reminds us why. Satch has been around for over two decades crafting some of the most memorable guitar instrumentals with only few less fortuitous songs here and there (namely the ones with lyrics). Fortunately his latest record Professor Satchafunkilus and the Musterion of Rock is full-blown instrumental record with only few vocal lines included (e.g. I Just Wanna Rock, which actually turns out to be the weakest track on this album). A 70s-tinged rock track with shoutout chorus and cowbell can be a fun way of reminiscing the past but as a song it stands out negatively. Regardless on the brighter side this record lives up to the name as the album has a strong feel of rhythm and groove. Musically though it seems Satch is about to run out of ideas now more than ever before. While majority of the songs being good on this release, almost none of them manage to surprise the listener but leave him/her wondering where this was heard before.

Overall this album is rather pleasant sonic journey despite the few drawbacks. For example, Satch's son ZZ Satriani was featured on the title track where he played saxophone and gave the record refreshing breath of air. Furthermore tracks like Asik Vaysel and Andalusia provide exotic flavour to the album and ultimately leave a positive impression. The bonus DVD, which contains three live performances and behind the scenes footage on the making of the album was a nice addition to this moderately good album. While I doubt any of the tracks on this record would become timeless classics like some of Satriani's older material, Professor Satchafunkilus and the Musterion of Rock still is a noteworthy realease.
