Kings of Leon's fourth album Only by the Night starts off with an impressive opener "Closer" with lyrics exploring the love between a human and a vampire. Sadly the album never quite reaches the same level of quality afterwards, but is rather moderate throughout. For me the album peaked both lyrically and musically on the first track, after which there are only few standouts amidst the less inventive songs. The highlights on this album are Closer, Use Somebody, and Be Somebody, besides which the album sets sails on the sea of mediocrity. This record sounds rather good, though drums could have had a little bit more depth to them - compression seemed to eat it away at times. Overall, Only by the Night has been produced well, and apart from the few aforementioned highlights it has some other memorable moments every now and then.
