Jean-Pierre Schenk's Metamorphosis has previously garnered an increased awareness as a music project heavily influenced by Pink Floyd. Their fourth release, however, is here to set a new tone and paves way for larger audience - hence the band lives up to their name now more than ever. One of the core strengths of this group are their lyrics, which at times are thought-provoking and meaningful. Regardless, the vocal performance itself is somewhat uninspired though suits the album's tone rather well for the most part - it might be just me, but hearing more emotionate interpretation of the songs would have benefitted this record.
Instrumentation on Dark is nicely varied and compositions are mainly well-crafted though I hate to admit this record is a way too repetitive at times. I'm known to point out any excess gimmickry on music, but in the case of Metamorphosis I have to go the opposite road by stating this group favours simplicity to the point of making listener almost numb hoping for some degree of proggimmickry. Pointlessly lengthening certain passages even if those passages happen to have nice layering and melodic licks, certainly work against the general flow of the record and the enjoyment listener gets from listening. All in all, Dark is rather good album with certain clearly distinguishable weaknesses. For listeners who actively listen music while paying attention to details, I would advise to pay attention to lyrical message over the musical score, since these compositions mainly serve as means to set the mood and setting - good background music, but nothing breathtaking.
