Abstract Point of View

Label: Lion Music
Genre: [Guitar-oriented Instrumental Rock]
Overall Rating: 8.0
Music: 8.0
Production: 7.5

Faraz Anwar's debut album 'Abstract Point of View' contains guitar virtuosity in its actual meaning. Unfortunately Anwar wasn't able to get other musicians to perform on this album and therefore drums are performed by a drum machine... Drums lack authenticity, but it's quite a minor problem on this otherwise truly interesting release.

Songs contain a lot of different influences (such as Steve Vai and Mike Keneally) and compositions are quite diverse. Compositions have slower melodic guitar passages sometimes highlighted with piano, eerie atmospheres, Steve Vai like guitar noodling ranging from slow to faster fretboard fireworks. At times Anwar plays 'outside the box' and uses odd time signatures and unorthodox scales. This gives his songs 'not so often heard' characteristic. As a guitarist, Faraz Anwar belongs to the Allan Holdsworth school.

Production on this album is quite good... As I earlier stated, drums lack authenticity thus downgrading the production rating. Otherwise there's not much to complain (sounds are quite solid).

Overall this album is a good instrumental CD... I wouldn't recommend it to 'untrained' ears, though. If you're a friend of guitar instrumentals (especially 'over-the-top' guitarists such as Steve Vai) this CD is for you. What I was left expecting for was more melodic, cohesive compositions. I suggest Faraz Anwar to listen Andy Timmons in order to train his compositional skills... Although the songs on this album were quite good, they could have been better. Nevertheless, this CD is worth checking out (but remember to listen it before buying).
