Patrik Carlsson is a guitarist described as the best guitarist to come out of Sweden since Yngwie Malmsteen and Mattias 'IA' Eklundh... He claims to have learned whammy bar techniques by listening to Vai's Passion and Warfare album and practising by its guidance. Well, Vai's influence is the most obvious while listening to this record (you can also hear some Morse, Satriani, Malmsteen and Lukather influences). Even Carlsson's guitar tone reminds me of Steve Vai.

This album is quite diverse. For example, 'Still Believe' reminds me of Vai tonally while 'Twilight Zone' contains chicken picking la Steve Morse and there are even some ballads... Everything from slower phrases to faster sweeps are covered on this album. Patrik Carlsson seems to use a lot of Vai's phrases (so he definitely has listened to Steve Vai more than enough). There's even a cover of Mattias 'IA' Eklundh's instrumental 'Lisa's Passion For Heavy Metal'... I must admit that I like the original better, Carlsson didn't even come close to the original (he did a few mistakes). Every now and then Carlsson has some trivial parts on his songs, which spoil the mood sometimes. And I must admit that this album doesn't offer anything new (all this have been heard before), but this is the case with most albums. Also the vocal parts on some songs should have been removed (Carlsson's English skills are nowhere near good). However, there were also some really good songs (mostly slow ballads such as Exotic Bossa) on this album.

The biggest flaw regarding this album is the mastering. Guitars have been mastered too loud thus causing frequent distortion. Also the programmed drums lack authenticity and bass might be programmed too... Also mixing could have been done better. By the way, the distortion is so frequent that I can't enjoy this album entirely.

Patrik Carlsson is obviously a talented guitarist, but the 'dead in the water' mastering ruined this album for me. This album would have been a lot better when mastered right, now you can only enjoy partially. Hopefully Carlsson will be able to get professional mastering (and drummer) on his upcoming albums...
